Help for Calf Pain

Calf pain can exist as a result of a cramp, a sprain or strain or a number of other injuries and illnesses. The first step to getting help for calf pain is to understand the underlying cause, which will play a role in determining the right treatment options to alleviate the pain. Treating the underlying cause for the pain is often the most important step in alleviating the pain associated with it.
  1. Ice

    • When calf pain is caused by an injury, the first defense is often ice. Ice fights against swelling, and so should be applied to the calf immediately following the injury. Fill a plastic bag with ice and wrap it in a towel, or use an ice pack. Apply ice to the injured area for twenty minutes at a time, four times a day until the pain has been relieved, according to NYU's Langone Medical Center. Alternate the ice on and off the calf because ice constricts the blood vessels and therefore should not be left on for too long.

    Elevation

    • When the lower calf is injured, blood can be prevented from pooling by raising the injured leg above the heart. By preventing blood from pooling, swelling will be prevented. Elevate the leg above the heart as much as possible during the first few hours following injury.

    Heat

    • Heat can reduce pain in the calf, and can be used when ice is not being applied for the reduction of swelling. The heat, when applied to the calf in pain, can dilate blood vessels in order to promote faster healing. If heat is applied too quickly following icing, swelling may be caused. Heat is not necessary in promoting healing of calf pain, but it can reduce some pain. According to NYU, no heat should be applied for 3 to 5 days, and then when only returning to activity. Heat should then be applied before stretching or playing a sport.

    Anti-Inflammatory Medications

    • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications of a nonsteroidal nature can be utilized for reducing calf pain, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Aspirin-based over-the-counter creams can also be used to reduce inflammation and pain without causing irritation in the process.
