What Is Cervical Strain With Right Radiculopathy?

According to the Whiplash Information Page, whiplash is the most common type of cervical (neck) strain. Auto accidents cause most whiplash injuries, but any action taking the neck beyond its range of motion can cause a cervical strain.
  1. Symptoms

    • Cervical strains irritate nerves that travel from the neck into the chest, arms and hands. When this irritation radiates into the chest, shoulder, arm or hand on the right side of the body it is called right radiculopathy.

    Diagnosis

    • The doctor will perform a basic neurological exam in the office, checking for balance problems and changes in muscle strength and sensation. An MRI or X-ray may be ordered to examine the cervical vertebrae for disc herniation.

    Treatment

    • The doctor may suggest physical therapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and hot or cold compresses to treat cervical neck pain. If pain lasts more than six weeks, the doctor may prescribe stronger pain medications, muscle relaxers and steroid injections.

    Considerations

    • Discuss your whiplash treatment with your doctor. According to the Mayo Clinic, adding acupuncture or massage to your treatment plan may be appropriate with minor neck strain.

    Warning

    • Contact your doctor if you have severe pain at night, difficulty breathing and weakness develops in your right arm or hand. These symptoms may indicate nerve damage.
