How to Treat a Sore Achilles Tendon
The Achilles tendon is located along the side of the foot, and is the largest tendon in the human body. The tendon is also one of the most common places of injury, and Achilles tendonitis, an injury that occurs when the Achilles tendon is strained, accounts for 11 percent of all running injuries, according to Sports Injury Clinic. Although injury to the Achilles tendon can be painful, simple home care procedures can minimize pain and discomfort.Things You'll Need

Treating A Sore Achilles Tendon
-
1
Most cases of sore or torn achilles tendons are mild with moderate symptoms, but it's important to see a doctor and determine the severity of your condition. For more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe strong pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicine. In extreme conditions, a patient may be required to see a physical therapist or perform strengthening exercises.

To alleviate pain and discomfort, ice the tendon daily. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and press to the tendon for 20 minutes, then take it off for 20 minutes, for one hour. Be sure to wrap the ice in a towel; the ice should not be applied directly to the injury.

3
Patients should rest for 10 to 12 hours daily to allow tendon to heal. Refrain from any strenuous physical activity that may aggravate the tendon, including running, walking and climbing stairs.
-
4
Invest in a pair of comfortable, supportive shoes and wear during and after injury to support foot while it heals and to prevent future injuries to the Achilles tendon. Shoes should have good arch support and plenty of cushioning. Additional shoe implants can be purchased to cushion feet.
-
5
Take pain relievers daily until symptoms subside. For more severe cases of Achilles tendonitis or injuries to the Achilles tendon, a physician may prescribe stronger pain relievers. Follow dosage precisely to alleviate discomfort and inflammation.
