Shin Splint Remedy
-
Rest
-
Do not continue to do the activity that caused the pain. The best thing to do when shin splints first appear is to rest your leg.
Ice
-
Ice the area to help reduce the inflammation. Massage with ice for 10 minutes up to four times a day for one week.
Wrap
-
Wrap your lower leg with an elastic bandage. This compresses the area and reduces inflammation by limiting muscle movement.
Medication
-
Over-the-counter analgesics like aspirin and ibuprofen help relieve pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen can ease the pain, but will have no affect on the swelling.
Shoes
-
Purchase a good pair of athletic shoes that cushion the force of repetitive impact of your exercise routine. This will help prevent developing shin splints.
