How to Heal Strained Vocal Cords

Strained vocal cords leave you sounding raspy along with having a painful sore throat. People often strain their vocal cords screaming at events such as concerts. If you give lectures, do a lot of public speaking or sing for a living you are also at risk. Healing your strained vocal cords requires some rest and a few home remedies to help you get back to normal once again.

      Avoid speaking whenever possible. When you must speak do so at a low volume. At this time your vocal cords need all the time off they can get in order to heal. A dry erase board can be used to help you communicate without speaking.

      Drink eight cups of water or more throughout the day. Water will keep your throat hydrated and will also help soothe your inflamed vocal cords.

      Boil a cup of water and toss in a piece of ginger root. Allow the water to boil with the ginger root for 10 minutes, then remove the root and add 2 tsps. of honey to your ginger tea. Sip this slowly to soothe your vocal cords. Make a cup three times a day or more often as needed for pain.

      Bring a cup of water to boil and then place it on low to medium heat. Add in a few drops of eucalyptus oil and stir. Hold a towel over your head and place your face 12 inches from the pot of water. Inhale and exhale for a few minutes. Do this three times a day to help moisten cords.

      Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol or caffeine until your vocal cords have healed. Also avoid eating dried foods or grainy foods that might be hard to swallow. Hot soup is a great food to eat when healing strained cords.
