Low Neck & Shoulder Pain

If you are experiencing pain both low in your neck and in your shoulder, the cause could be a herniated cervical disc. Your doctor can make a diagnosis and offer you treatment options.
  1. Herniated Cervical Disc

    • In a herniated cervical disc, the soft center of an intervertebral disc ruptures and pushes out through the outer layer of the disc. According to the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch, herniated discs are more common lower on the neck than higher.

    Neck Pain

    • A herniated disc can cause neck pain, especially when you move your head. The pain might ease when you lower your head and look down.

    Shoulder Pain

    • According to the National Institutes of Health, a herniated disc in your neck can cause deep pain near or over either of your shoulders.

    Risk Factors

    • Risk factors for experiencing low neck and shoulder pain because of a herniated disc include being male, being older and performing strenuous physical tasks.

    Treatment

    • Your low neck and shoulder pain can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication. Physical therapy and traction can help. If these measures do not bring relief, surgery on the disc is an option.
