Trauma & Intervertebral Disc Pain

Four out of five people will experience pain in their lower back at some point in their lives. Back pain can be caused by trauma that damages one of your intervertebral discs.
  1. Intervertebral Disc

    • An intervertebral disc is a rubbery pad that rests between the vertebrae in your spine. It acts as a cushion for your spine and gives your back flexibility. If one of your intervertebral discs is damaged, it can cause pain.

    Trauma

    • Physical trauma can cause damage to an intervertebral disc. Sudden pressure put on the disc, even though it is not severe, can cause a disc to herniate. An accident, an injury or lifting a heavy object can cause trauma to your back.

    Symptoms

    • Intervertebral disc pain usually begins in your lower back or your neck. It can then travel down the back of your leg, or spread from your neck to your shoulder and arm.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for intervertebral disc pain usually begins with anti-inflammatory medication and rest. If your pain is severe or if your mobility is affected, then you could need surgery.

    Considerations

    • Ninety percent of people recover from intervertebral disc pain without requiring surgery.
