What are four ways to show empathy in medical field?
1. Active Listening
Engage with patients and their families by giving your undivided attention. Make eye contact, nod your head, and interject periodically to show you are listening and understanding.
2. Paraphrasing and Summarizing
Restate what the patient has said in your own words to ensure proper understanding. Summarizing the patient's concerns demonstrates that you are paying close attention and can help validate their feelings.
3. Express Empathy
Acknowledge and verbalize understanding of the patient's emotions, thoughts, and situation. This could be as simple as saying, "I can imagine this is a challenging situation for you" or "I understand why you feel frustrated."
4. Respond Appropriately
Tailor your response to the emotions the patient is expressing. Offering sympathy, assurance, or reassurance may be appropriate in different circumstances. Show that you care and take their feelings seriously.
