How to Eliminate Neck & Head Pain
Neck and head pain are common complaints in doctors' offices. The cause is usually strain or tension in the muscles of the neck and spine due to poor posture, lack of exercise or lack of sleep. Sometimes neck and head pain can be an indication of something more serious, so be sure to consult your doctor if the pain lasts longer than one week or is accompanied by swollen glands, numbness, incontinence, paralysis, or difficulty breathing. In general, though, mild or moderate neck and head pain is no cause for concern and can be treated inexpensively at home.Things You'll Need

1
Begin by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen. This should help reduce the inflammation and swelling and thus relieve the pain significantly. Take as often as necessary but do not exceed the recommended dosage.
-
2
Apply cold or heat to the neck and head. Start with an ice pack for the first few days. Apply for 20 minutes several times a day and be sure not to place ice directly on the skin. After a few days, start applying heat using a heating pad. Remember to turn off the heating pad before you fall asleep. A hot shower or bath can also help increase blood flow and reduce swelling.

3
Try some relaxing neck exercises. Move the neck and head side to side and up and down to stretch the muscles. Don't exert the muscles too much when doing this.
-
4
Avoid regular exercise, including jogging, recreational sports, and weightlifting. Allow the muscles to rest until the pain subsides.
-
5
Ask a friend, spouse, or professional to massage your neck and head. A soothing massage can do wonders to reduce the pain and discomfort.
-
6
Adjust your sleeping environment, especially if you believe it has caused your neck and head pain. You can try sleeping on a firm mattress without a pillow. Also consider using a special orthopedic mattress or pillow.
-
7
Use a soft neck collar for temporary pain relief to restrict the motion of your neck and allow the muscles to heal.
