Neck Pain Cure

Neck pain can stem from a variety of sources, including a car accident, a ruptured disc or sleeping in a way that creates pressure on the neck. Whatever the cause, there are plenty of methods to help relieve pain and stiffness in the neck.
  1. Collars

    • Sometimes cervical collars can be a useful device to alleviate a pain in the neck. They can be found at most medical supply stores and drugstores. These collars help keep your neck immobile so muscles cannot be strained and aggravate the current injury. This is a temporary method, since restraining all movement in the neck may weaken the muscles. Try it for up to two days and if the pain does not subside, you will need to see a doctor or physical therapist.

    Ice & Heat Therapy

    • An ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables can help ease neck pain. Use ice immediately after you begin to feel pain for instant relief. It also keeps the area from becoming inflamed. Leave it on the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat the process every few hours or as needed.

      You may also interchange icings with heat therapy in the form of a heating pad, hot shower, or an icy hot cream. Heat can help loosen stiff neck muscles and increase blood circulation to the painful area for a quicker recovery.

    Posture

    • The way you carry your body has a huge impact on neck pain relief as well as preventing future injuries. This is one of the causes that we don't think about often but should. Be mindful of how you sit, stand, or engage in physical activities. Don't slump over or you may end up looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

      Always sit up straight and tall and lift your chest. Imagine someone is pulling your head up both when you sit and walk. It is better for the chest to protrude out rather than being caved in when hunched over. Remembering your posture can go a long way in relieving current neck pain and preventing future trouble.

    Tips

    • The following are some extra tips to consider when dealing with neck pain:

      * Hold the phone in your hand when in use. Do not prop it between your ear and shoulder letting it rest on your shoulder.
      * Avoid dramatic coughs and sneezes. People who throw their head back and jilt it forward to complete a cough or sneeze have a greater likelihood of getting a neck injury.
      * Determine if the pillow you sleep on is hurting the neck. There is no single type of pillow that works for everyone, so you must determine which is right for you. However, be sure it does not push your head forward.
      * Most neck pain can be eliminated over the course of one to three days. If pain persists or gets worse, you may need to seek the advice of a doctor or physical therapist.
