Symptoms of a Herniated Disc in the Neck

A herniated disc in the neck is a common source of pain. The disc is a soft, rubber-like cushion with a gel-like center. When the center of the disc bulges out toward the spine it is like a chemical irritation to nerves.
  1. Headaches

    • Headaches in the back of the head may develop as a result of pain originating in the area between the neck and shoulder.

    Muscles

    • Muscles may spasm or tighten uncontrollably. Muscles in the hand used to grip things will become weaker, as well as muscles in triceps and biceps.

    Neck and Shoulder

    • There will be a burning pain in the shoulders near the shoulder blade. It will painful to turn or bend the neck.

    Arm and Hand

    • Pain that begins in the arm will move into the hand. The pain may burn and the arm may begin to tingle and feel numb.

    Rarer Symptoms

    • In more extreme and rare cases, symptoms of a herniated disc in the neck include clumsiness, changes in walking and inability to control the bowels and bladder.
