Apply heat or ice to help relieve the pain and stiffness of the neck.

Take pain medication to alleviate the symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and acetaminophen are recommended. Steroids, muscle relaxants or other prescription medications may also be indicated.

Exercise the neck muscles to help maintain mobility and flexibility and relieve stiffness.

Physical therapy can be helpful if the patient cannot perform appropriate exercises at home.

Devices such as a cervical collar may be necessary to stabilize and properly align the neck to prevent disc compression.
