Nearly everyone develops a stiff or painful neck while driving. This is usually worsened when trips are long. You may find it helpful to place some sort of reminder object or note near your driving space as a little "cognitive kick" to pay attention to your posture.

Have a knowledgeable friend, healthcare professional or personal trainer observe your driving body posture. Areas of special concern that should be observed are head and shoulder position, as well as your lower back. Proper alignment is essential to reduce strain.

The hand position that probably causes the least strain on the neck is holding the steering wheel at the 5 and 7 o'clock position. Your grip should be relaxed, but also firm enough to handle a sudden road emergency.

Do gentle range of motion (ROM) neck exercises clockwise then counter-clockwise. This a great way to help assist the muscles of cervical spine feel more limber-but of course never do these (or any other) neck exercises while driving!

Even on short trips it is always a good idea to take a break from driving and enjoy the moment. You can also walk a little and place a hand behind your neck and gently stretch your neck toward that hand. Repeat on the opposite side.
