What Problems Can Neck Issues Cause?
Problems in the spine and ears sometimes stem from unresolved neck issues. Persistent pain, stiffness or other discomfort in the neck and along the spine, as well as other symptoms, including altered hearing, signal the need for consultation with a physician.-
Ringing of the Ears
-
Neck problems can suggest damage to nerves and muscles, strain upon which can affect the tissue in your ears. Such stress can result in constant ringing in the ears, a condition known as tinnitus.
Spinal Problems
-
Discomfort in the neck can be related to spinal conditions. Dr. Sanjog Mathur wrote in the Deccan Chronicle in February 2010 that neck pain can be an indication of various spinal disorders.
Shoulder Pain
-
Neck pain and shoulder pain are often related. Krisha McCoy wrote in the May 2009 edition of Everyday Health that neck issues such as a bone spur or a herniated disk can cause shoulder pain.
Neurological Problems
-
Since the neck is part of the cervical spine, or the first seven bones running from the base of the brain to the shoulder blades, damage in this area can lead to neurological problems. If neck pain persists, assessment and treatment to prevent permanent damage is necessary.
Considerations
-
Neck pain may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as headache, pain around shoulder blades, dizziness, blurred vision, fever, night sweats and unintentional weight loss.
