How to Manage RSD

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a complex, chronic disease and can be very painful. Nerve problems from injuries often cause this intense pain. There is no cure for RSD but there are several methods of treatments you can explore to manage your pain and other symptoms.

Explore different pain relievers. Over-the-counter medications for RSD include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin, and naproxen sodium. In certain situations, opioids are prescribed but those with histories of lung disease should avoid taking them.

    • 2

Try topical pain relievers. Some help in reducing sensitivity. Prescription ointments that contain lidocaine or amitriptyline, ketamine and clonidine combinations are effective.

    • 3

Treat the area with heat and cold packs. This might reduce swelling and sweating. If the area is cool, however, you may want to apply heat only.

    • 4

Consider physical therapy. This may help you regain muscle strength and range of motion. Treatment might also include desensitization, which may help reduce long-term pain. The Mayo Clinic notes that early detection increases the effectiveness of physical therapy.

    • 5

Try sympathetic nerve blocks or a sympathectomy. Nerve blocks are injections given stop pain signals from moving up the nerve. A sympathectomy is a surgical procedure that destroys the nerve causing the pain.

    • 6

Learn about transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to discover if this treatment is an option for you. This is a form of therapy which sends electrical pulses to nerve endings through the skin.

    • 7

Consider biofeedback to help ease pain. With biofeedback, patients become aware of their bodies so they can manage pain through relaxation.

    • 8

Stay busy. Try to stay engaged in as many daily activities as you can. Because depression is often associated with the RSD, it's good to stay connected with friends and family.

    • 9

Seek encouragement from a group. Joining support groups where others share your frustrations is one way to combat the struggles you face from day to day.
