Disorders of the nervous system are known as neurological disorders. Neurological disorders can be related to damage to the brain, spinal cord or nerves. There are more than 600 disorders of the nervous system, which are broken down into different categories of neurological disorders.

    • The categories of neurological disorders are based off of characteristics such as cause, symptoms and prognosis.

    Purpose

    • There are many different ways to treat neurological disorders. By categorizing the different kinds of neurological disorders doctors better know how to treat a specific neurological disorder.

    Genetic

    • Genetic is one category of neurological disorders. As the name suggests genetic neurological disorders are hereditary. Huntington's disease and muscular dystrophy are examples of genetic neurological disorders.

    Degenerative

    • Degenerative neurological disorders are disorders of the nervous system that are progressive. The fact that cells get damaged or die is the reason degenerative neurological disorders get worse over time. Parkinson's disease is an example of a degenerative neurological disorder.

    Other Types

    • Brain tumors, seizure disorders, and infections are some other categories of neurological disorders. Cancer, epilepsy and meningitis are examples of these types of neurological disorders.
