Diabetic Neuropothy Pain

Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by diabetes. Pain and numbness, particularly of the feet, are very common symptoms of this disorder. Although some people experience only mild symptoms, others experience pain that is disabling.
  1. The Pain of Neuropathy

    • The pain of diabetic neuropathy is sharp and jabbing. It is usually worse at night. The pain may be so intense that the lightest touch, such as a sheet covering you, may cause extreme pain.

    Complications

    • Untreated diabetic neuropathy can lead to loss of a limb. Nerve damage can lead to decreased sensation, which may result in unawareness of an infected sore on a leg or an arm.

    Treatment

    • It can be difficult to obtain complete relief from pain. Different medications may be tried, but they don't work for everyone. Medication options include anti-seizure medication, antidepressants, codeine or a lidocaine patch.

    Alternative Treatment

    • Some alternative treatments may provide some relief. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that may relieve the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. Other non-drug treatments include acupuncture, hypnosis and relaxation techniques.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Keeping blood glucose under good control is extremely important for a diabetic who has neuropathy. Stop smoking, choose healthy food and stay physically active. Be sure to examine your feet each day to check for cuts, bruises, red marks or swelling.
