Side Effects

Common side effects of levetiracetam include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, depression, increase in anxiety, vertigo and memory loss.
Considerations

A lower dosage should be considered for people who have impaired kidney functioning, since this drug is primarily excreted through the kidneys. Taking levetiracetam may increase risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in depressed individuals, so close monitoring of symptoms and behavior is necessary for individuals with a co-morbid mood disorder.

Use of levetiracetam during pregnancy is not recommended, since it may lead to development of birth defects.
Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, agitation, aggression, poor cognitive functioning, respiratory depression and coma.
