Seizure Signs & Symptoms

Seizure signs and symptoms are associated with temporary changes in behavior, consciousness, perception, physical movement and sensations. Signs and symptoms associated with seizures may occur before the seizure, during the seizure and after the seizure. However, it is possible to experience a seizure without being aware of any seizure signs or symptoms.
  1. Identification

    • A seizure occurs when there is a change in the brain's electrical functioning processes. This change often takes place in the cerebral cortex area of the brain.

    Early Warning Signs

    • Approximately 20 percent of people with seizure disorders experience early warning signs, according to the Merck Manual. Early warning seizure signs may include changes to tastes and smells, warming sensation and feelings of panic, fear and/or déjà vu.

    Seizure Symtpoms

    • Symptoms of a seizure include loss of consciousness, convulsion, incontinence and loss of control over bodily movements.

    Postseizure Symtpoms

    • After a seizure has occurred, a person may experience memory loss, confusion, extreme fatigue, headache, nausea and an urge to go the bathroom.

    When to Seek Help

    • A seizure is a serious medical condition and requires emergency medical treatment. If you experience signs and symptoms associated with a seizure seek help immediately.
