What Are the Side Effects of Taking Lyrica?

Lyrica is the brand name for the drug pregabalin produced by Pfizer. It is most commonly prescribed to treat pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and fibromyalgia and to prevent seizures. As with any medication, Lyrica can have some common and less-common side effects.
  1. Identification

    • Lyrica comes in the form of capsules that are taken orally. These contain anywhere from 25 to 300 mg of pregabalin combined with the inactive ingredients talc, cornstarch and lactose monohydrate. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 2004.

    Common Side Effects

    • These side effects are common for people taking Lyrica and are not considered dangerous: drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision, dry mouth, edema, memory or concentration difficulties, weight gain from increased appetite, anxiety, skin rash, constipation and stomach pain.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Rarer and more serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include: Unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, especially if you also have malaise or fever; allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, gums, tongue, throat or larynx; easy bruising or bleeding; or rapid weight gain.

    Other Concerns

    • Anti-epileptic medication has been shown to increase the risk of suicidal behavior. Contact a doctor immediately if a person taking Lyrica shows changes in mood or behavior, appears depressed or anxious, angry, restless or hyperactive. Anyone already seeking help from a mental health professional should be monitored closely for mood changes.

    Warnings/Withdrawals

    • No one taking Lyrica should stop taking the medicine or change the dosage without consulting his or her doctor, especially if taking it to counteract seizures. Stopping the medicine could make seizures worse. Always wear a medical alert bracelet or carry an identification card that indicates you are taking Lyrica.

Lyrica withdrawal symptoms might include sleeping difficulty, nausea, headaches and diarrhea.
