Sciatica Relief During Pregnancy

The sciatic nerve is the nerve that runs from the lower back all the way down the back of the leg and into the feet. This nerve allows you to feel sensation in your legs and allows movement in the muscles. When this nerve becomes inflamed and sensitive it is called sciatica. When the nerve and surrounding area begins to ache during pregnancy, most people jump to the conclusion that it is sciatica, but it is usually the result of a disk injury. Visit a doctor for proper diagnosis.
  1. Massage

    • Direct massage to the area that is in pain can relieve pressure and discomfort that comes along with the back pain. Massage can help you to relax which will ease the tension of the sciatic nerve and lower back, thus resulting in an ease of symptoms. Massage is usually combined with the therapist giving you a few exercises that can help strengthen the lower back and abdominals which will help you support your baby.

    Chiropractic

    • A chiropractor can be useful is relieving sciatica by properly aligning the body. If the body is out of alignment, many times nerves can be pinched and will cause pain. A chiropractor can properly diagnose you and tell you where your underlying problems are. Find a chiropractor that has experience with prenatal care; your obstetrician should be able to recommend one.

    Self Help

    • Normally anti-inflammatory medications would be recommended for someone who is suffering from sciatica. However, pregnant women should never take any over-the-counter medication without consulting a physician. These medications will usually be off limits while you are carrying your baby. Instead, place ice and heat packs on the area that you are experiencing the pain. Use ice packs first and apply them for 15 to 20 minutes. Wait for 30 to 60 minutes, then apply heat for 30 to 45 minutes. Heat and ice used together will reduce pain and increase circulation. This can be repeated as necessary throughout the day. Wear flat shoes to promote proper body alignment and maintain a correct posture. Avoid sitting for too long which can cause stiffness. When lying down, be sure to support your baby bump.
