Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatments

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back to the buttocks to the back of the thigh. Spinal problems and trauma are common causes of sciatic nerve pain, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are a variety of treatments available to those who suffer from sciatic nerve pain.
  1. Physical Therapy

    • Exercises performed in physical therapy strengthen the muscles of the back, buttocks and legs, which can relieve pressure and strain upon the sciatic nerve. Physical therapy is a common treatment for sciatic nerve pain caused by herniated discs in the spine.

    Prescription Medication

    • Anti-inflammatory medications are effective for the treatment of sciatic nerve pain, in combination with muscle relaxants. Prescription narcotics or tricyclic antidepressants alleviate pain without providing any actual treatment to the condition.

    Steroid Injections

    • Steroid injections given in the back relieve the inflammation that causes sciatic nerve pain. This treatment gives short-term relief from the condition, but it is not a long-term solution.

    Surgery

    • In cases where pressure is responsible for sciatic nerve pain, a surgeon can remove the herniated disc. This is normally reserved for cases where the nerve is causing other problems, such as bladder incontinence or bowel problems.

    Self-care

    • For minor cases of sciatic nerve pain, home-based treatments may help, such as alternating hot and cold compresses, light stretching and over-the-counter pain relievers.
