Symptoms of Sural Nerve Damage

The term sural nerve can actually refer to any of the nerve cords in the lower calf that run the length of the tibia bone. Damage symptoms range from spasming pain to numbness. And while treatment is available for nerve damage, the damage can never fully be repaired.

Symptoms

• Symptoms of a damaged sural nerve include pain, burning, shooting spasms, numbness, hypersensitivity, weakness in the tissues around the nerve and diminished motor function.

Function

• The sural nerve conveys sensory data messages from the receptors in the lower foot up the leg to the central nervous system and brain. Damaged nerves interrupt this process and causes motor function and sensory interpretation issues.

Significance

• Injuries often occur on the topical portion near the skin. The proximity to the skin makes it easily injured because of the compressions on the skin.

Treatment

• Medical treatments for sural nerve damage use antivirals and steroids. Another option is surgery, and it involves directly reconnecting the nerve.

Time Frame

• Treatment of damaged nerves can last for years depending on the severity of the damage.
