Causes of Small Finger Numbness

Numbness in your small fingers may cause you to have discomfort and difficulty doing things in normal daily life such as writing, typing or driving. If the numbness in your small fingers spreads to other areas or is accompanied by pain or swelling, you may need evaluation by a medical doctor. According to the National Library of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic, the causes of numbness in your fingers include nerve damage and certain underlying medical conditions.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

• Carpal tunnel syndrome may cause numbness in different parts of your hands and arms, including your small fingers, and results from excessive repetitive motions.

Nerve Damage

• Damage to the upper part of your spinal cord or the nerves of your arms may result in numbness or tingling sensations in your wrists, hands and small fingers.

Compressed Disk

• A compressed disk in your neck or upper back may reduce sensations in your arms and hands and cause numbness in your small fingers.

Hand Injuries

• Injuries to your hands, such as slamming your finger in a door or breaking a bone may result in small finger numbness.

Brain Damage

• Numbness in your small fingers and hands may result if you have brain damage from a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke.

Tumors

• Tumors on a nerve in your arm, wrist or neck may cause numbness in your fingers due to a lack of blood flow.
