The uneasy feeling usually occurs inside the leg, between the knee and ankle. Less frequently, it can occur in the feet, thighs, arms and hands. The sensations usually occur on both sides, but can happen on only one side of the body.

The time of day effects this condition. The symptoms are most severe at night, particularly right before sleep. They often go away during the early morning hours. This relief usually continues throughout the day.

Certain situations can bring on the symptoms in people who have restless leg syndrome. This includes sitting for long periods of time such as during a road trip, a long flight, having a limb in a cast or relaxation exercises.
