What is cyclothymic disorder?

Cyclothymic disorder is a mental health condition characterized by repeated mood swings that are less severe than those seen in bipolar disorder. It can cause significant distress and impairment in a person's daily life.

Symptoms of cyclothymic disorder may include:

* Periods of elevated mood (hypomania) that last for at least two days and are characterized by:

* Increased activity or energy

* Increased talkativeness

* Racing thoughts

* Difficulty sleeping

* Impulsivity

* Decreased need for sleep

* Inflated self-esteem

* Periods of low mood (depression) that last for at least two days and are characterized by:

* Feeling sad or hopeless

* Loss of interest in activities

* Changes in appetite or sleep

* Difficulty concentrating

* Fatigue or loss of energy

* Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

* Suicidal thoughts

These mood swings can be unpredictable and can occur frequently, with periods of normal mood in between. In order to receive a diagnosis of cyclothymic disorder, a person must have experienced these symptoms for at least two years.

Treatment for cyclothymic disorder may include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both.
