Asbestos & Parkinson's Disease

The cause of Parkinson's disease is not yet known, although environmental triggers have been investigated. While asbestos does not appear to cause Parkinson's Disease, pesticides have been shown to increase the risk of the disease.
  1. Asbestos

    • The fiber mineral asbestos can be found in a variety of industrial applications as it resists heat and corrosion. These include brake shoes, roofing and flooring materials. It causes illness when inhaled and asbestosis of the lungs can be fatal.

    Parkinson's Disease

    • Parkinson's Disease affects the nerve cells in the brain that control muscle movement. Symptoms include trembling, poor balance and coordination, stiffness and slowness of movement. Genetics play a role in the disease, as does age, and the disease is more common in men than in women.

    Causation

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, asbestos is not a cause of Parkinson's disease. However, exposure to other environmental toxins, such as pesticides, can increase the risk of the disease.
