Explanation of SOD

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) affects early brain development in newborns. Scientists aren't exactly sure of the causes of SOD, but have identified genes that seem to be associated with the illness.
  1. Description

    • SOD is a rare brain and nerve disorder. It causes abnormalities in brain structures, the optic nerve and hypoplasia (underdevelopment) in other parts of the body.

    Effects

    • SOD's effects on the optic nerve may cause severe visual impairments, while hypoplasia in the center of the brain may cause intellectual disabilities. The pituitary gland is also affected, causing slow growth and low muscle tone.

    Treatments

    • Hormone replacement therapy can treat some symptoms from pituitary hypoplasia, but the physiological underdevelopment is generally permanent. So there is no correction for underdeveloped nerve or brain tissue.
