If someone has a seizure what would you do first?
If someone is having a seizure, it's important to stay calm and follow these steps:
1. Ensure Safety:
- Gently guide the person to lie on their side, preferably on their left side, to help prevent choking and keep their airway clear.
- Loosen tight clothing around their neck and chest.
- Remove any nearby objects that the person may hit themselves on during the seizure.
2. Call for Help:
- If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, call for medical help (local emergency services).
3. Protect the Head and Body:
- Support the person's head by placing something soft under it, like a folded jacket.
- Do not restrain the person or force anything into their mouth.
- Avoid shaking or moving them excessively.
4. Time the Seizure:
- Use your phone or watch to keep track of how long the seizure lasts. This information will be useful for medical personnel.
5. Stay with Them:
- Reassure and stay with the person during the seizure until it stops and they regain consciousness.
- Monitor their breathing and check if they regain consciousness after the seizure.
- If they don't regain consciousness, call for medical help.
6. Post-Seizure:
- Once the seizure is over, turn the person on their side and allow them to rest in the recovery position.
- Help comfort them as they come to and reassure them that they're safe.
7. Seek Medical Attention:
- If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, the person has never had a seizure before, they injured themselves during the seizure, or they don't regain consciousness, seek medical attention immediately.
Remember that your primary goal is to keep the person safe and assist them during the seizure. Avoid using force, placing anything in their mouth, or attempting to restrain them as these actions can be potentially harmful.
