What is axonopathy?

Axonopathy describes pathological conditions that affect the axon of neurons.

Axons are crucial for the transmission of electrical impulses and communication within the nervous system. When the axon is damaged or diseased, it can lead to a range of neurological dysfunctions and symptoms.

Axonopathies can arise from diverses causes, including genetic mutations, metabolic disorders, physical trauma, neurotoxins, and immune system dysfunction. Some common examples include:

- Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: This group of inherited disorders affects the peripheral nerves, causing progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, and sensory impairments. It results from mutations in various genes involved in axon structure and function.
