What Are the Signs and Symptoms of ALS?
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurological condition that affects muscle movements. Although a genetic defect is the cause of the condition in about 10 percent of cases, the National Institutes of Health report that the cause of the condition is usually unknown. The symptoms of ALS get worse over time.-
Early Symptoms
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, the earliest symptoms of ALS include trouble lifting the front of the foot as well as the toes (a symptom known as footdrop), a feeling of weakness in the legs, feet and ankles, weakness and clumsiness of the hands, slurred speech, trouble swallowing (choking and gagging), and cramping in the muscles of the arms, shoulders and tongue. Symptoms of ALS usually develop after the age of 50.
Breathing and Swallowing
-
As amyotrophic lateral sclerosis symptoms develop, it becomes increasingly difficult to breathe, chew, speak and swallow, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Head Drop
-
A symptom known as head drop develops in ALS. This causes the head to drop forward due to weakness in the neck and spine, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Muscle Weakness and Paralysis
-
Muscle weakness in ALS often starts in one specific area, such as the hands or feet, then spreads across the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Muscle weakness makes it difficult to perform tasks, such as lifting, climbing stairs and walking. Ultimately, weakness of the muscles gives way to paralysis, which means the total loss of a muscle's movement.
Other Symptoms
-
Some people may experience additional symptoms with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. These include drooling, muscle contractions and spasms, swelling of the ankles, feet and legs as well as weight loss.
