Information on CBD Disease

Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) robs its victims of muscle control, mobility, speech and eventually mental acuity. This neural ailment currently has no cure.
  1. Description

    • Baylor College of Medicine describes CBD as a variant of Parkinson's disease. This progressive illness causes increasing loss of nerve cells in the brain, leading to muscular disability.

    Causes

    • While it appears a protein defect in the neurons plays a major role in CBD, the origin of such protein flaws remains a mystery. The illness does not appear to pass from generation to generation.

    Symptoms

    • Patients with CBD often lose the use of a leg or hand, followed by other symptoms such as muscle spasms, speech problems and mental impairment. Symptoms usually worsen over three to eight years.

    Diagnosis

    • CBD bears a close resemblance to traditional Parkinson's disease except for its tendency to affect one side of the body before the other. Only an autopsy can reveal the abnormal brain proteins specific to CBD.

    Treatment

    • Medical science currently has no way to slow, arrest or reverse CBD. Treatment focuses on muscle relaxants for spams, medications for memory and emotional issues, and attempts to aid patient mobility.
