Detoxification for Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a motor system disorder that occurs because of the loss of the brain cells that produce dopamine. Genetics is a significant risk factor for getting Parkinson's disease. The chemicals and other toxic substances that you are exposed to every day also play a role. A patient with Parkinson's disease may have a genetic abnormality in the way the body gets rid of toxins. This causes increased amounts of toxins in the body, which directly affect the nervous system. Glutathione detoxification therapy seems to help those with Parkinson's disease.
  1. Glutathione Therapy and Detoxification

    • Glutathione therapy is a successful detoxification therapy for Parkinson's disease, which was started in 1998 by Dr. David Perlmutter, an expert in the field of neurology. He is studying the use of glutathione in fighting diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Glutathione is a tiny molecule that consists of three amino acids and is present in almost every cell of the body. It helps remove or detoxify harmful substances from the body.

The primary role of glutathione is slowing Parkinson's disease by destroying free radicals. Free radicals are harmful to the body and brain and appear when toxins are present in the environment. Perlmutter reports that 80 percent to 90 percent of those using glutathione therapy demonstrate a remarkable improvement. These improvements include less rigidity and better walking, movement, coordination and speech. Tremors are far less evident and there is a decrease in depression in people with Parkinson's disease using this treatment.

Perlmutter suggests giving 1400 mg of glutathione intraveneously for 10 minutes three times a week. He uses this protocol at the Perlmutter Health Center in Naples, Florida. Glutathione must be taken intravenously because it is digested too fast when taken orally. The herb milk thistle causes retention of glutathione, so it is part of the glutathione detoxification program.

Even those who have late-stage Parkinson's disease gain some benefit from the treatment. Clinics across the country, such as the Hoffman Center in New York, use glutathione detoxification therapy successfully for those suffering from Parkinson's disease.
