Does Humana Require a 6-Month Diet for Lap-Band?
-
Purpose of a Supervised Diet
-
The purpose of the supervised diet is to demonstrate that the patient is unable to lose sufficient excess weight through means other than surgery, and also to show that the patient is willing to make the necessary dietary and behavioral changes following bariatric surgery.
Terms of the Diet
-
The supervised diet typically requires regular monthly checkups and weigh-ins with your physician. Your doctor will devise a diet plan based on your individual needs, which together you will review and modify as needed. You may also be required to attend regular appointments with a dietitian and support group meetings.
Medical History
-
In the past, Humana often accepted 12 months of medical history and proof of failed diet attempts in lieu of a supervised diet. As of January 2008, however, all Lap-Band patients must undergo the supervised diet in order to be approved for surgery.
Supporting Documentation
-
Some supporting medical documentation may still be required, so be sure to keep copies of all your medical records as well as information regarding any other weight-loss measures you have tried, such as specific diet plans, groups such as Weight Watchers, or medication.
Approval Process
-
After your required documentation is submitted, it may take two to four weeks for the Humana review board to examine your case and make a determination, though some patients are approved in a few days.
