How can i help my 10 year old grandaughter who very is over weight?
Talk to her parents.
They may not be aware of the extent of her weight problem or may not be sure how to help her.
Encourage her to be physically active.
Find activities she enjoys and that she can stick with. Set realistic goals and praise her for her efforts. Some fun and engaging activities that will help her lose weight without feeling overwhelmed include:
- Biking
- Swimming
- Playing tag or other outdoor games
- Hiking
- Dancing
Make healthy changes to her diet.
Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats. Cook healthy meals at home together and involve her in the process. Some healthy eating tips for kids include:
- Offer her healthy snacks instead of junk food
- Encourage her to drink plenty of water
- Be a role model and eat healthy yourself
Talk to her about body image.
Help her to develop a positive body image and to focus on her strengths and abilities rather than her weight. Some ways you can talk to her about body image include:
- Encourage her to focus on how she feels, rather than how she looks
- Remind her that everyone is different and that there is no one ideal body type
- Help her to identify and challenge negative thoughts about herself
- Praise her for her accomplishments and strengths
Be supportive and patient.
It takes time to make healthy changes, and there will be setbacks along the way. Be there to support her and encourage her to keep trying. Let her know you love her and that you're proud of her, no matter what.
