What is oophagia?
Oophagia, derived from Greek "ōon" ("egg") and "phagein" ("to eat"), is a term encompassing all types of egg-eating in the animal kingdom; in most cases this refers to an animal consuming their own eggs or the eggs of another animal of the same species. There are a variety of reasons why a certain animal engages in oophagia, with the benefits varying from reproductive purposes to acquiring additional nutrition. Most often observed among insects and amphibians, egg-laying reptiles have also displayed cases of oophagia in certain contexts
