1
Maintain a balanced diet full of calcium and vitamin D. The National Institutes of Health recommends that you intake at least 1,200 mg of calcium and 800 to 1,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day. If you are not achieving this through your diet, vitamin supplements should be taken.

2
Exercise regularly to reduce the risk of fractures caused by osteoporosis. Jogging, walking and dancing are good weight-bearing exercises. You may also want to use small weights and stretch bands for resistance exercise. Yoga and tai chi can help increase balance.

3
Prevent falling by using a cane or walker when walking around if you feel unstable. Rubber soled shoes will help with traction. Falls can result in fractures to the hip, wrists or spine that may be immobilizing.
