What is mtastatic?

Metastasis is the process by which cancer cells move from the primary tumor to other sites in the body. It is the most common way that cancer spreads, and it is responsible for a majority of cancer deaths. Metastasis can occur through the lymphatic system or through the bloodstream.

Lymphatic metastasis occurs when cancer cells travel from the primary tumor to nearby lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the body's immune system. Cancer cells can enter the lymph nodes through small channels called lymphatics. Once inside the lymph nodes, the cancer cells can grow and spread to other parts of the body.

Hematogenous metastasis occurs when cancer cells travel from the primary tumor to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Cancer cells can enter the bloodstream through small blood vessels near the tumor. Once in the bloodstream, the cancer cells can travel to any part of the body.

Metastasis is a complex and poorly understood process. Researchers are currently studying how cancer cells metastasize in order to develop new ways to prevent and treat metastasis.
