Side Effects of Fosamax Medication

The prescription drug Fosamax was approved by the FDA in 1995 for the treatment of osteoporosis and arthritis. Fosamax is also used to treat a condition of the bones called Paget's Bone Disease. Side effects of Fosamax can be categorized into severe or moderate. Those experiencing severe side effects as a result of Fosamax need to seek emergency medical help.
  1. Dosage

    • Fosamax is prescribed in doses ranging from 10 mg to 70 mg for more severe conditions. In order to avoid some unpleasant side effects (such as nausea), it is important that you take Fosamax while standing upright with a full glass of water. Do not eat or drink anything besides water while taking Fosamax and do not lie down for thirty minutes after taking your pill.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects which require immediate emergency treatment include chest pain, seriously irritated skin (red rashes or severe itching or hives) or swelling of the face or jaw. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or if you have severe back pain or pain under your ribs, seek emergency care.

    Moderate Side Effects

    • Other side effects which are considered moderate include nausea, as well as weakness/tiredness or heartburn. If you experience any side effect which you feel is related to taking Fosamax, please discuss it with your doctor. He may need to adjust your Fosamax dosage.

    Interaction

    • Some drugs may interact with Fosamax or cause side effects to worsen. Talk with your doctor about your full medical history and any drugs you are taking. Do not take antacids (Rolaids/Tums) within an hour of your Fosamax dose, as this can affect how your body absorbs the medication. Certain types of drugs will interact with Fosamax and should not be taken.

    Warning

    • Bone mineral tests will need to be conducted regularly to make sure that Fosamax is benefiting you. It is important that you maintain regular contact with your doctor and do not miss any appointments, particularly those when bone mineral tests will be conducted.
