How to Remove Tens Adhesive Pads

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit (TENS), is a machine that delivers electrical impulses via adhesive electrode pads placed on the skin. Used as a method of chronic pain management, the TENS unit pads are held in place by an adhesive gel that is an excellent conductor of electricity. When you finish your TENS treatment you should remove the adhesive pads to prevent damage to the skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the TENS unit and disconnect the electrical leads.

    • 2

Lift the corner of the electrode pad. Many electrode pads will have at least one corner that does not have adhesive material, this will allow you to easily gain access to the pad.

    • 3

Place your free hand flat against the skin near the pad. Apply a slight pressure to support the skin surrounding the pad.

    • 4

Pull the electrode off the skin slowly. Do not pull straight up off the skin as this may damage the skin. Instead, maintain a low profile and keep the pad close to the surface of the skin. This method will prevent damage to the underlying skin.

    • 5

Dispose of the adhesive pad in a trash receptacle.

    • 6

Wash the skin with soap and warm water to remove any remaining sticky residue.
