How to Sit in a School Desk

Correctly sitting in a school desk reduces the chance of neck, back and leg pain. Most school desks do not adjust to your body, making it even more important to sit correctly. You should sit properly while doing all activities, including writing. While it may be tempting to lean forward or lay down, your spine and neck will be in better shape if you do not.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend your knees slightly as you sit down in the chair. Do not drop down.

    • 2

Press your back against the back of the chair so you are sitting up straight (see References). Hold your shoulders back so your shoulder blades move inward towards your chest.

    • 3

Rest your feet flat on the floor, without crossing your legs. Your feet should be the distance of your hips apart. Do not rest your feet on anything underneath your desk or under a desk in front of you.
