How to Use a TENS Stimulator Kit
Electrical therapy to control pain is often administered via a TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. This is a portable, battery operated device. The patient can administer treatment without aid of a medical professional. The TENS unit aims to control acute pain caused by muscle strains, arthritis, migraines and other painful ailments. TENS therapy is often used by those who cannot or do not want to use drugs to relieve discomfort. The unit sends electricity through the electrode wires to patches on the skin. This produces a tingly feeling to the nerves which alters the patient's perception of pain.Instructions

1
Apply alcohol to the areas in which you plan to place the electrodes. You will either want to cover the painful area with the electrodes or surround the area with them.
-
2
Dry your skin prior to putting the electrodes in place.
-
3
Place a dab of gel on the base of each electrode. The gel acts as a conductive for the electricity. If your medical supplier does not provide this gel, it can be purchased over-the-counter in various formulations including those with aloe vera.
-
4
Position the electrode wires on or around the painful areas. Use the sticky patches that are supplied with the unit or medical tape to adhere the electrodes to the skin.
-
5
Pin the electrode wires into the electrodes themselves. Then plug the electrodes into the TENS unit. Set the controls on the unit to control the speed of the electrical signals. Start at a low setting and gradually increase until you experience a tingling sensation. Turn down the setting if it becomes uncomfortable. Speak with your doctor regarding what levels he recommends.
-
6
Time your treatment according to your physician's recommendations. Always check your skin following a treatment to make sure there is no redness or irritation. Report any adverse effects to your doctor.
-
7
Remove the electrodes from your skin. Turn off your unit and disengage the patches and electrodes from the machine.
-
8
Clean the skin where the patches or tape was in place. Use soap and warm water. Dry the areas thoroughly.
-
9
Apply lotion to the area where the electrodes were positioned. Place the electrodes in different spots the next time you use the TENS unit.
