How to Use a Cane Correctly
Using a cane for the first time can be confusing. There are many cane types available, from a single-tip cane to a four-tip cane, with different handle styles. Your walking needs will determine what type of cane you need. Being comfortable with the cane is important. How to use the cane will be determined by its requirement -- whether it is needed to assist in stability or balance or to compensate for injury and bear more weight.Instructions

Select the proper cane for your needs. If the cane is to be used for assisting balance issues, a one-tip cane is appropriate. Four-tip canes are designed to bear more weight and might be more appropriate for those with weakness or injuries. The cane should have a comfortable handle that does not cause hand discomfort after significant use. Stand with your arms at your side. The length of the cane should come up to the crease in wrist. When holding the cane, the bend in your elbow should be natural and comfortable.

Prepare your home to avoid to help avoid accidents. Remove rugs and electrical cords that may cause slipping. Place no slip mats and grab bars in bathrooms, and other areas of the home that maybe too small for using the cane such as mud rooms and entryways.

Use the cane depending on your walking needs. For stability and balance, the cane should be picked up and moved in unison with the opposite leg. In these cases it might not matter in which hand the cane is held. Those using canes for supporting weakness or injury should follow directions of a physical therapist or doctor. Typically, the cane should be used in unison with the injured leg.

Grab the handrail and step up first with your good leg when climbing stairs. The cane should be positioned in the hand opposite the injured leg. To come down the stairs, start with the cane on the first step, followed by your injured leg and finally the good leg which bears most of your weight.
