How to Relieve Hernia Pain by Lying Down

A hernia is an abnormal bulging caused by a weakness in muscle tissue. Although this can occur in any part of the body, hernias often affect the muscles in the abdomen. For some, hernia symptoms are virtually nonexistent. Others might experience discomfort as a result of the hernia and need to seek relief.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan meals so they take place three to four hours prior to the time you plan to lie down. This will ensure that you are resting on an empty stomach, so as not to trigger symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn. If you plan to lie down on your lunch break, for example, eat an early breakfast and then wait to have your afternoon meal after you rest.

    • 2

Get into a stretched position while lying down, paying close attention to the site of the pain. Keep track of the bulge and take note of any changes in size.

    • 3

Feel for the bulge in the area where you experience pain. In some cases, lying down can cause the bulge and the pain to temporarily disappear.
