How to Soothe Achy Feet After a Long Day

Standing all day for work or play can increase inflammation or irritation in your feet. Feet tend to swell when tired, which means you might have difficulty walking or removing your shoes. Fortunately, quick and simple relief is available for achy feet. Relief can come in the form of over-the-counter products or natural remedies.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise your feet to relieve swelling. Lie in the bed or on the couch and place a couple of pillows underneath your leg to elevate your feet. Keep your feet raised above the heart to reduce swelling and pain.

    • 2

Apply an ice pack. Take a package of frozen vegetables from the freezer or use an ice pack to soothe achy feet and stop inflammation. Keep the cold compress in place for up to 20 minutes.

    • 3

Use heat to reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort. Apply a hot cloth or heating pad to your feet, or sit in a warm bath after a long day to help relax muscles and reduce pain.

    • 4

Gently massage foot cream into the skin of your feet. Give yourself a quick massage to increase blood flow and reduce soreness. Menthol foot creams are available at drug stores to help soothe tired, achy feet.

Give your feet a rest. Foot pain can radiate up your legs and into your back. Let your feet recover after a long day. Plan to remain in a sedentary position, either resting in the bed or in a chair, to decrease discomfort.
