How to Use Talwin Along With Other Opioids

Combining more than one opioid medication is dangerous. Talwin is an opioid antagonist medication or synthetic opioid and it is prescribed for severe to moderate pain. It is a depressant to the central nervous system and can have adverse interactions with many other medications. Talwin like other opioids are habit forming, especially if misused or over a long term for chronic pain conditions. If a person is taking opioids such as Talwin and they are still suffering from pain they should contact a doctor immediately before increasing the dosage or adding other pain medications. Talwin should be decreased slowly to prevent any adverse withdrawal effects.

Use opioid medications only under the direct supervision of a physician, make sure you give your physician a full list of all your medications and what conditions they were prescribed for. When multiple opioids are ingested they increase the sedation effects and cause severe breathing distress, which can be life threatening.

Talk to your pharmacist about interactions between taking Talwin and other opioid medications such as a cough syrup with the added ingredient of codeine. The pharmacist you use will be able to view all your medications and advise how best to combine the two opioids. In many instances, taking Talwin for pain as needed can be halted when taking the cough syrup with codeine.

Talk to your physician about alternating between the opioid medications in order to best relieve chronic pain conditions. In many instances, the Talwin can be decreased significantly if another opioid is introduced. Chronic pain sufferers may develop a tolerance to Talwin and need to change opioid medications to receive better pain control. Increasing the dosage of Talwin increases the addiction risk, as well as increased health concerns.
