How to Inject and Filter Stadol

Butorphanol tartrate---or butorphanol, previously marketed as Stadol---is a potent medication used to control pain under anesthesia during surgery and pain experienced after surgery; for chronic pain management (such as back pain); and for the treatment of migraine headaches. It is a prescription medication administered by three routes: intravenous, intramuscular and nasal spray. It used within the hospital setting and not prepared for home use. Medications injected into the person are prepared by filtering the solution using sterile technique.

Things You'll Need

  • Stadol (butorphanol) for injection
  • 5-micron filter needles (2) for hypodermic syringes
  • 1 hypodermic syringe
  • Alcohol pad
  • Powder-free sterile gloves

Instructions

    • 1

      Collect the Stadol from the narcotic cabinet. Sign out the drug using the protocol of the facility as it relates to narcotic control.

      Swab the top of the Stadol medication vial with an alcohol sponge.

      Withdraw the Stadol from the vial using a filter needle and the sterile syringe.

    • 4

      Remove the filter needle used to withdraw the Stadol from the vial and replace it with the second sterile filter needle prior to injection.

      Inject the Stadol as ordered by the physician by either intravenous injection or intramuscular injection.
