How to Deal With Lyrica Side Effects

Lyrica is a prescription medication used to treat nerve pain resulting from conditions like fibromyalgia and shingles. Although Lyrica works wonders for many patients, it can cause serious side effects in others. Common side effects include drowsiness, weight gain and dry mouth.

Instructions

  1. Steps

    • 1

Take Lyrica in the early evening. Since sleepiness is a common side effect of Lyrica, it is suggested that you take this medication in the evening and get a full eight hours of sleep. This will give the medicine time to absorb into the blood stream, leaving you feeling less groggy the next morning.

    • 2

Monitor your weight. Lyrica sometimes causes weight gain. To avoid this side effect, it is important to weigh yourself often. Diet choices and a regular exercise routine can also lessen the likelihood of Lyrica-related weight gain.

    • 3

Increase your liquid intake. Since Lyrica can cause dry mouth, it is important for you to drink plenty of water and suck on ice chips. Sodas and other beverages containing caffeine should be avoided as they increase the chance of dry mouth. Other ways to avoid dry mouth are to sleep in a room with a humidifier or use an over-the-counter saliva substitute.

    • 4

Decrease your salt intake. Lyrica can cause swelling, especially in your hands and feet. This can be kept under control by using less salt in your diet. Remember to drink more water and keep active. Ice can also be used to keep swelling down.

    • 5

Call your doctor. If you believe you are having serious side effects from Lyrica such as an allergic reaction (usually indicated by a rash, breathing trouble or face swelling). If you experience any depression or are feeling suicidal get in contact with your doctor or the emergency room immediately.
