Nose Pain Information

The term "nose pain" can actually cover a gamut of conditions, ranging from sinusitis to a broken nose to allergies. The key is the location of the pain, and the conditions under which the pain began.
  1. Description

    • A bruised or broken nose is the direct result of an injury, stemming from a physical activity. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to the presence of an otherwise harmless trigger. Sinusitis is the prolonged occurrence of allergy symptoms, which can lead to further problems, such as infections.

    Location

    • A pain localized to the nose itself could signify an injury such as a bruised or broken nose. More all-encompassing pain, usually located more behind the nose and in the sinuses, could be a sign of a sinus infection or seasonal allergies.

    Cause

    • A nose injury usually occurs as the result of an accident or fall, or due to rough play in sports. Allergic reactions occur due to any number of stimuli, such as pollen or animal dander. Sinusitis can be caused by a cold or other allergies.

    Symptoms

    • The pain associated with a broken nose may be accompanied by a crooked appearance and swelling or bruising. Allergies and sinusitis also involve swelling, but it is usually felt within the sinuses more than seen.

    Treatment

    • For a broken nose, pain medication is prescribed and a nasal splint may be necessary to reset the bone. Allergies and sinusitis treatment usually consist of identifying the underlying cause, along with antihistamines and decongestants.
