Infrared Therapy for Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia is a term used to describe any type of foot pain experienced in the metatarsal region, which is the area at the base of the toes that is often referred to as the ball of the foot. Metatarsalgia is a common condition that is usually caused by excessive pressure from restrictive footwear. Metatarsalgia usually resolves itself once proper-fitting shoes are worn, but if pain and inflammation linger, infrared therapy is one possible course of treatment.
  1. Infrared Therapy

    • Infrared therapy, also referred to as LED therapy or light therapy, has been used for close to 50 years for a variety of painful conditions. The therapy works by increasing new capillary formation to replace damaged ones and increasing blood flow, which brings additional oxygen and nutrients to irritated or damaged tissue and nerves. Infrared therapy also encourages the production of collagen, which is used in tissue repair and replacement. Infrared therapy calms nerve tissue by channeling negative ions into the body, which causes the brain to send positive ions, including calcium, to balance out the negative ions. Both positive and negative ions regulate nerve activity, and a high concentration of them in an affected area can result in pain relief.

Infrared therapy is administered through special pads, portable devices and even gloves and socks. Treat metatarsalgia by wearing infrared therapy socks or by using portable devices that provide therapy. Speak to your foot doctor or family physician about how often to administer infrared therapy.
